A Tonnara is an exclusive B & B on the coast of one of Sicily’s most beautiful seaside resorts, Cefalù. This is a place where natural beauty and innovative design are fused together, providing a venue that is perfect for relaxation and the enjoyment of beautiful surroundings that will make your holiday experience unique.
How did “A Tonnara” come about?
The concept for a B & B called “A Tonnara” came into being in 2013 and the project started coming together the following year when my brother and I bought the property. It is a villa dating back to the 70’s which was built on the ruins of an old tuna processing factory and then restored in such a way as to cater for a Bed & Breakfast. Our objective was to create a B & B that was different from all the others, somewhere smart with a selective clientele and sought-after facilities.
What kind of visitors do you have and what services can you offer them?
The clientele is generally from the professional classes with the majority being of European nationality. Between March and April, they are mainly German and from May to the end of June we also get a lot of English and French guests. A Tonnara is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway – in fact, around 90% of our guests are couples. Virtually all the rooms are doubles except for our suite which can accommodate up to four people.
We offer basic services which are available to all the different accommodation types with the added bonus of some distinctive features: from the bathrooms belonging to some of the rooms, you can enjoy breath-taking views while you have a relaxing shower, obviously, without the risk of being seen from the outside.
We decided to furnish the B & B in a modern style, without overlooking some acknowledgement of the past combined with a refined taste as evidenced, for example, by the inclusion of some majolica dating back to the 1700’s. Each room has its own individual design. In fact, each room is a different colour with a theme that is carried through into the detail of the furnishings.

We have noticed that each room has a different and particular name. What was the reason behind doing this?
Our five rooms, four of which have sea views, each have the name of a different type of wind: The West wind, the Mistral, the Tramontana (a cold north wind), the Grecale (a Mediterranean wind) and the Levant (which is an easterly wind). This particular choice was due to the position of each room and its exposure to the different winds. Each room has been carefully designed with great attention to the aesthetic details but above all to functionality and the comfort of our guests.
In addition to the normal comforts that you would expect to find, such as an en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, a fridge and a TV., all the rooms are fitted with a small kitchen with a hob.
What kind of relationship have you tried to create between the restaurant and the B & B?
Our catering facilities are open to both guests and non-residents. But obviously, the guests who are staying at A Tonnara can expect some special treatment: they generally receive a small gift and a welcome drink and the chance to savour some typical Sicilian dishes. On summer evenings, the restaurant provides breath-taking views across Cefalù’s marina and the volcanic stacks of the Caldera. The main goal remains that of ensuring special attention is paid to our customers’ requirements in order to provide them with a holiday that offers every comfort and we try to achieve this both in the B & B and in the service they receive in the restaurant.
Are there any new features scheduled for the new season that starts on the 15th March?
Yes, there is actually a very interesting new feature planned: we are intending to install a Jacuzzi on the terrace which can only add to the dreamy atmosphere. A dip at sunset whilst sipping a glass of champagne with your other half: a perfect treat for the senses with which to pamper yourself and make your holiday truly unforgettable.
