Porto Capo d’Orlando: a gateway to the sea located just a few miles from the Aeolian islands
Porto Capo d’Orlando, only 45 minutes from Cefalù, is a picturesque gateway to the sea, only a few miles from the iconic Aeolian islands. Recently finished after decades of being incomplete, it has quickly become a symbol of beauty and a landmark of Sicilian tourist life.
Capo d’Orlando Marina was officially opened in July 2017, perched on the ruins of a former port, as a way for lucky visitors to discover the charm of the north-eastern coast of Sicily, and giving the possibility to reach the Aeolian Islands faster and in a more direct way.
Already enthralled by the startling beauty of the Messina Province of Capo d’Orlando, those who reach the port can enjoy a unique view of the waterfront. Here there is a well-organised port structure with a walkway that overlooks the sea on one side, while on the other side you can take advantage of the myriad of shops and clubs, set in a perfect holiday atmosphere.
Porto di Capo d’Orlando offers a variety of services, such as mooring assistance for boat owners (with over 500 berths available), commercial spaces, and a large free parking for those arriving from the mainland. Sea, boats, shops, a spacious and functional port – all these add to the great touristic nature of this beautiful seaside town.
Inside the port area, there is a route that allows a glimpse into the ancient Cave del Mercadante, a protected archaeological site. From here, the rocks that are extracted from the sea are used as millstones in local mills.
The port provides an important source of tourism and income for the territory of Messina and is an important milestone for the city – what used to be an unfinished project that began in the 1970’s and wasn’t finished, today is a great beacon of satisfaction for “Capo of d’Orlando Marina.” Full of boats, open shops, visitors and tourists, it has given new life to the port – even in the evening.
Following on from an ambition the town has had for several years, the port has now become a luxurious state-of-the-art facility, a project developed over a long period of time by MPN Marinas network of tourist ports. Located only a stone’s throw away from the wonderful scenery of the Aeolian Islands – Alicudi, Filicudi, Lipari, Panarea, Salina, Stromboli, Vulcano – it represents a Sicily that is hungry to grow, innovate and improve.
Tourists and locals can enjoy the port alongside other tourist areas of Capo d’Orlando, and with the constant coming and going of boats (making good use of the ample space provided to them,) guests can also take advantage of the fast connections they offer. From morning to evening, the port is a meeting point that offers a range of delights: from the mooring of the boats to a simple walk past the shops, a stop at the large restaurant on the top floor, or the dreamy atmosphere of the transparent dome open to the starry sky at night.
